Skype for iPhone is out

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

As the title suggests, Skype (iTunes link) for the iPhone is out!

It will, of course, enable you to make cheap VoIP calls over Wi-Fi; it will work on both iPhone and iPod Touch and feature iPhoneish, not Skypeish menus.

Other features include chatting, taking a photo from within the application and using it as your avatar image, accepting incoming conference calls (but not creating them), and sorting your contacts alphabetically or by online status. As for the other things that are missing in this initial version, there’s no support for SMS, file transfer, as well as handling second incoming Skype calls.

It’s time to unite

Just to be clear, I’m not anti-Microsoft!

Some of their products are good. Give me a few minutes and I’ll even come up with some examples.

However, as a Web Developer, if there’s one thing that does grate me, it’s how MS seems to come up with a new set of rendering rules they apply to each release of their web browser Internet Explorer (IE).
Granted, IE7 was a fast improvement on IE6 and even seemed to adhere to web standards (using past tense as IE8 now in beta).

But…as explained in the below site, IE6 was released in 2001 and has some poor rendering rules. In fact, I have to cater for it’s strange non-web standard quirks by applying CSS hacks!
I have to do this as although many home users are probably now using IE7, many businesses do not have this luxury.

I fully support the below idea of phasing out IE6! I agree that I can’t alienate my audience by simply disregarding IE6 ever existing and not catering for it, but I refuse to spend my time fixing non-critical issues for it.
